Yuguangdao is an island that makes up part of the Anping district of the southern city of Tainan. The surf spot is on the west side of the island near a now closed and derelict scenic park that opened over 60 years ago (which is also said to be haunted!). Recent tourism development has led to a much cleaner and more beautiful beach, and with watersports activities such as surfing, windsurfing, sailing and kayaking taking place, expect crowds on weekends and holidays.
In summer, typhoons or SW fronts bring better swells. In January and February, the waves are the most inconsistent and it’s recommended to check the swell forecast a day before going during this time of the year. As a beach break, there are both lefts and rights and the wave has some nice peaks that are suitable for beginners. At the south of the bay, there are often fishing and mussel nets in the water, which most surfers won’t get too close to so be wary about this.
