Help, How-to, & Troubleshooting

Below are common questions about installing and using the Swelleye app, as well as common troubleshooting tips.

How do I install the Swelleye APP on iPhone?

The Swelleye APP installs in a few taps using Safari's "Add to Home Screen" feature. Both iPhone and iPad are supported.

  1. Open Safari (Apple's built-in browser). The APP can't install from Chrome or Firefox on iOS.
  2. Go to swelleye.com/en.
  3. Tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen (the square with an upward arrow).
  4. Scroll down in the share menu and tap "Add to Home Screen."
  5. Tap "Add" in the upper-right corner.

The Swelleye APP icon will appear on your home screen. Tap it to launch the APP in full-screen mode (no more Safari URL bar, no more browser tabs).

Once installed, sign in to your Swelleye account from inside the APP to enable push notifications. Notification controls live under the "Push Notifications" section on the APP page.

How do I install the Swelleye APP on Android?

The Swelleye APP installs via Chrome (or any modern Android browser) using the "Install app" prompt.

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Go to swelleye.com/en.
  3. Tap the menu button (⋮ in the upper-right corner) and choose "Install app" or "Add to Home Screen."
  4. Confirm "Install."

If you don't see "Install app" in the menu, look for a small install icon in Chrome's address bar instead (it usually looks like a monitor or a download arrow).

The Swelleye APP icon will appear on your home screen and in your app drawer. Tap it to launch the APP in full-screen mode.

Once installed, sign in to your Swelleye account to enable push notifications. Notification controls live under the "Push Notifications" section on the APP page.

What is the primary-device limit?

Swelleye push notifications are sent to exactly one device per account, the primary device. This is your phone, your tablet, your desktop computer, or whichever device you currently use day-to-day with the Swelleye APP.

If you install the APP on a second device (a new phone, a tablet, computer, etc.), that device shows the notification settings in read-only mode. You'll see what's configured but you can't change settings from the second device. To manage settings from the new device, you need to switch primary to it.

To switch which device is primary:

  1. Open the Swelleye APP on the device you want to make primary.
  2. Go to the APP Settings section.
  3. Tap "Make this my primary device"
  4. Confirm.

The previous primary device will switch to read-only mode automatically.

This limit exists so notifications don't double-send across all your devices. Without it, you'd get the same Daily Surf Report twice every morning if you had both your phone and your tablet installed.

How do I turn notifications on or off?

Each push notification type has its own ON / OFF button inside the APP.

  1. Open the Swelleye APP.
  2. Scroll to the "Push Notifications" section.
  3. Expand the accordion for the notification you want to manage:
    • Daily Surf Report
    • Daily Surf Shot
    • Typhoon Tracker
    • Stream Back Online
  4. Tap "Turn ON" or "Turn OFF" inside that accordion.

You can also disable notifications entirely from your device's system settings:

  • iPhone: Settings → Notifications → Swelleye → Allow Notifications (toggle off).
  • Android: Settings → Apps → Swelleye → Notifications (toggle off).

NOTE: Turning notifications off at the system level overrides the per-accordion controls in the APP. Therefore, if you've disabled Swelleye at the system level, the in-APP notifications ON buttons won't have any effect until you re-enable system notifications.

Why am I not getting notifications?

If you've enabled a notification inside the APP but you're not receiving them, work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm the notification is ON inside the APP. Open the relevant accordion under "Push Notifications" and check that the button reads "Turn OFF" (which means the notification is currently ON).
  2. Confirm system notifications are allowed. Check iPhone Settings → Notifications → Swelleye, or Android Settings → Apps → Swelleye → Notifications. Allow Notifications must be ON.
  3. Confirm you're on the primary device. Swelleye only sends each notification to your primary device. If you've recently installed the APP on a new phone or tablet, that device may not be set as primary device yet (see the topic "What is the primary-device limit?" above).
  4. Confirm you've signed in. Push notifications require an active Swelleye account session. Tap your profile button inside the APP to verify.
  5. Confirm your picker is configured. Daily Surf Report and Stream Back Online need at least one surf spot selected. Daily Surf Shot needs a surf spot AND a send time selected.
  6. Wait for the scheduled time. Daily Surf Report and Daily Surf Shot send on a fixed schedule, based on the hour you selected. Stream Back Online and Typhoon Tracker sends are event-driven, so the timing varies.
  7. Confirm Do Not Disturb (or Focus mode) is off, or that Swelleye is whitelisted as an allowed app. Pushes can arrive silently in Do Not Disturb mode and never appear on the lock screen.

If you've worked through all seven checks and notifications still aren't arriving, please use the below Contact / APP Feedback form and include:

  • Your Swelleye account e-mail address.
  • Your device model + OS version (e.g. "iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 17.5").
  • Which notification type is missing.
  • When you last received a notification of that type, if ever.

I'm getting some notifications but missing others. Why?

Each notification type has its own opt-in switch, and a few notification types have additional rules:

  • Check each per-feature opt-in toggle in APP Settings. Daily Surf Report, Daily Surf Shot, Typhoon Tracker, and Stream Back Online each have their own ON / OFF button. Toggling one off doesn't affect the others.
  • Daily Surf Shot is not available on iPhone. iOS doesn't allow apps to embed remote images in push notifications, so the Daily Surf Shot screenshot can't render (see the iPhone image topic below). iPhone users don't receive Daily Surf Shot notifications at all; this is by design per the iOS limitation, not a bug.
  • Typhoon Tracker on iPhone is text-only (no typhoon track image displays, due to the same iOS limitation described above). The body still displays the typhoon update information, including a link to the in-APP typhoon tracker.
  • Typhoon Tracker sends only on your enabled time slots. You can pick any subset of 03:00, 09:00, 15:00, and 21:00 (Taiwan time). If you disabled a time slot in Settings, you won't receive the notification at that time. Sea and land warning notifications still get sent regardless of time slot selection.
  • Stream Back Online is per surf spot. You only receive notifications for surf spots you've opted in for. See the dedicated Stream Back Online topic below.

Why do notifications start working again as soon as I reopen the APP?

This is normal, and it usually means your notification endpoint has gone stale.

Each device that's installed the Swelleye APP has a unique push endpoint, which is the address the APP server uses to deliver notifications. Endpoints can expire over time (or after long stretches with the APP closed). When that happens, the server keeps trying to send, but the notification silently bounces.

Opening the app wakes a background helper (the "service worker") that keeps notifications working. The service worker checks the notification endpoint, refreshes it if it's outdated, and clears the temporary "bounce" flag. After that, notifications start flowing normally again.

If you notice notifications going silent again after a day or two without opening the APP, your phone is probably putting the browser into deep sleep. See the next topic for the Samsung / Android fix, or just open the APP once a day to keep the endpoint fresh.

Samsung / Android: Notifications went silent for hours, then resumed after I opened the APP. What happened?

Samsung phones (and some other Android manufacturers) have an aggressive battery-saving feature that silently puts Chrome to sleep if it sits unused for a while. While Chrome is sleeping, your phone accepts notifications from Swelleye's servers but drops them before displaying anything. The notifications never appear on your lock screen.

Opening the APP wakes Chrome back up, which is why notifications start working again immediately.

To prevent this on a Samsung phone:

  1. Open Settings → Battery → Background usage limits → Sleeping apps.
  2. If Chrome appears in Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps, remove it from both lists.
  3. Also check Settings → Apps → Chrome → Battery and set it to Unrestricted (the default is "Optimized," which can throttle background activity).

Other Android phones have similar battery-optimization settings under different menu names. Look for "Battery optimization," "Background activity," or "Allow background data" for the Chrome app.

iPhone: Do I have to install the APP for push notifications to work?

Yes. On iPhone, push notifications only work for the Swelleye APP after it's been installed to your Home Screen and launched at least once from the Home Screen icon. Visiting swelleye.com in a Safari tab is not enough, and iOS will not send notifications to a Safari tab.

If you've been using Swelleye in a Safari tab and want push notifications:

  1. Open swelleye.com/en in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button (the square with an upward arrow) at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Scroll down and tap "Add to Home Screen," then tap "Add" in the upper-right corner.
  4. Close Safari, and open the Swelleye APP from your Home Screen icon for the first time.
  5. Grant notification permission when prompted.

Once installed and granted permission, push notifications will start sending.

iPhone endpoints can also expire silently after long stretches with the APP closed. If notifications stop arriving, open the APP from your Home Screen icon once. The same wake-up-and-refresh behavior applies on iPhone as on Android.

Why don't notification images show up on iPhone?

Apple does not allow Home-Screen-installed web apps (which is how the Swelleye APP installs on iPhone) to embed remote images in push notifications. This is an iOS-level restriction. Every Home-Screen-installed web app on iPhone is affected the same way, not just Swelleye.

What this means in practice:

  • Daily Surf Shot: The primary feature of this notification is the surf cam screenshot. Since iPhones can't render it, the Daily Surf Shot is not sent to iPhones at all. Android users get the screenshot in the notification body.
  • Typhoon Tracker: Due to the iOS notification image limitation, there is no typhoon track image included with this notification. However, the body still displays the typhoon update information, including a link to the typhoon tracker in APP. Android users get the typhoon image in the notification body.

If Apple ever lifts this restriction, we'll add image support to iPhone right away. Until then, Android is the only platform that shows the Daily Surf Shot and the Typhoon Tracker images in-notification.

Stream Back Online: Why didn't I get notified when a live stream came back online?

Stream Back Online notifications have a few specific rules that explain almost every "I didn't get notified" case:

  • You must be opted in for that specific surf spot. The spot list is per-user. The default is "all surf spots" when you first opt in, but you can narrow the list in APP Settings. If you've narrowed the list and the live stream that came back online isn't in your selection, you won't get a notification for it.
  • The live stream has to actually transition from offline to online. If the live stream was already online when you opted in, you won't get a notification. You'll only get one on the NEXT offline → online cycle.
  • Stream Back Online notifications get sent within 60 seconds. Once a stream is back online, a notification should be sent to your phone within 60 seconds. However, depending on your phone's settings, you may not get the notification until you turn on or wake your phone.

If you were opted in for the right surf spot, the live stream did transition from offline to online, and you still didn't receive a notification, please use the below Contact / APP Feedback form and include the spot name plus the approximate time you expected the notification.

I cancelled my PRO subscription but I'm still getting push notifications. Why?

Push notifications continue for a short grace period after your PRO subscription expires. This grace period is about 8 hours (Taiwan time). This is intentional, not a bug. We allow a short grace period, so for example a subscription that expires at 3 am doesn't interrupt your morning Daily Surf Report.

After the grace period ends (typically mid-day Taiwan time on the day after your subscription expires), the PRO check kicks in and push notifications stop for that account (unless you purchased a new PRO subscription).

If you cancelled accidentally and want to keep receiving push notifications uninterrupted, you can re-subscribe at any time from your My Account page. There's no waiting period for a re-subscribe to take effect.
