Gongs is a reef break in Hualien that offers both lefts and rights. There’s a fishing harbor here with a parking lot, and the surf spot is about 200 meters south of the lot. Don’t try to enter or exit the water from the beach (especially during mid to high tide), as the concrete blocks make it very dangerous. It’s best to enter and exit from the harbor pier.
There is a giant boulder near the take-off zone, with the peak usually lining up just to the north of it. You can get lefts and rights here, depending on the swell, but don’t get too greedy with the rights as they will quickly close out onto the rocky beach.
Gongs is quite remote and there are no surf shops or public facilities nearby, so be sure to bring your own water for rinsing after your session.
