Getting its name from the walls making up the southern part of Wushi Harbor, this is a beach break that is enclosed by jetties on the left and right. This spot is typically called “Nanti,” meaning “south jetty” in Chinese.
Nanti rarely holds a wave, but with the arrival of a typhoon or the NE monsoon, it is one of the safest surf spots in Yilan. Due to a number of jetty walls blocking most N and NE swells, the majority of waves will be rights created by SE swells. With a typhoon or strong low pressure, the waves can be big and challenging. A peak can sometimes be seen in the middle, and when the wave is smaller, Nanti is good for longboarders and beginners.
During a large swell, the concrete blocks along the walls at both sides create turbulent currents. When coming back onto the beach, be careful not to get too close to either of the jetty walls, so as to avoid being pulled towards the blocks. Expect large crowds when the wave is working at Nanti, and if you’re taking you own transportation, please remember to respect the local fishermen and park properly.
