Located right across from Wai’ao Train Station, Wai’ao is an easily accessible surf spot. However, with Double Lions just to the north and Wushi Harbor to the south, Wai’ao is sandwiched between two of Yilan’s most popular surf spots, leading many people to often overlook the fairly consistent waves that are available here. Without the crowds of nearby spots, Wai’ao is a great place to go for a surf with friends.

When energy from long period swells arrives in the summer, there is a good A-Frame ride on the left side. With NE monsoon winds blowing in winter, there are rides on both the left and right. On the left side during winter, there is a long left point-break ride with a nice peak that is almost as good as the left at Double Lions. On the right side, the wave is a fast closeout suitable for practicing take-offs and finishing rides.

There are a lot of large boulders clearly visible near the shore along Wai’ao beach. Please note that during high tide, there are also some smaller boulders not visible, so it’s advisable to check conditions before surfing and ask at local surf shops where it’s safest to paddle out. With a large swell at high tide, it’s easy to be swept towards the large boulders, so pay attention to the distance from these potential hazards.
