Beibin is adjacent to Beibin Park, located in the heart of downtown Hualien City. Beibin is a beach break with a sand and rock bottom (mostly pebbles and cobblestones), with majestic views of the mountains towering over the city. Entering the water can be difficult if it’s your first session here. First, you need to climb down a small bank of rocks, then enter the Meilun Creek mouth and walk over some submerged boulders (be careful, they are slippery!). Once in deep enough water, you can lie on your surfboard and let the current take you out to the surfing zone (be careful after large storms, as the current can be very strong).
Ideal surf conditions include southeast or east waves with a west or northwest wind. The best tide is typically low to mid. On smaller swells, Beibin is a great spot for longboards. On typhoon swells during summer and larger northeast monsoon swells during winter, waves will become more hollow and shortboard-friendly. As there is a 2,300 feet (700 meter) long jetty at the northern part of the surf break, north and northeast swells need to be larger in order to wrap around the jetty. The jetty also acts as a wind blocker during northeast monsoon winds, when other surf spots in Hualien are blown out.
